Insights from a Strategic Marketer: Who is by your marketing side?

Marketing can be lonely. Especially when things start to ‘go wrong’ or ‘not work’. It’s at these points you need the right person by your marketing side.

Perhaps you’ve been so focused on ‘getting marketing things done’, shifting from one marketing activity to another, you’ve lost sight of your strategic marketing foundations – who, what and how:

1. Who we want to attract to our business

2. What we are offering them

3. How we need to engage them

An experienced marketer by your side can see you’re drifting away from these foundations, which is why your marketing is now scatter-gun, less focused, and therefore getting poor results.

Or perhaps your marketing ‘doesn’t work’ so you’re doubting all your marketing decisions and strategic marketing foundations. When actually, the right marketing person by your side can show you that a tweak here, a change there, and giving something more time is what’s needed because your foundations are rock solid. 

Perhaos you’re bewildered – marketing that was previously working, has stopped working. However, an experienced marketing head points out that the market has changed, so it’s about changing your communications to fit the new circumstances.

The people you have by your marketing side are important when business is going well – but they become crucial when times are tough.

So, as someone who’s by your marketing side, let me share with you what I’ve been saying this week:

First, if you’re finding it tough at the moment, you’re not alone. I’ve spoken to so many amazing business owners and marketers over the last four weeks and they’re all saying the same thing: it’s got tough recently. 

Next, accept that the market place has shifted. For most sectors, as confirmed by a report on UK Economic Growth that came out this week, growth hasn’t happened – there are only a few sectors experiencing it. Small businesses can confirm what official facts and figures are showing – people are slower to spend money than they were even a month ago.

Finally, think about who you need at your marketing side right now.

  • Do you need someone with that wise, experienced head and to work with you to calmly plot and plan a way forward?
  • Do you need a person who can show you how to sort out your marketing, so  you know what marketing to do, when and why, and that every marketing pound spent is worth it?
  • Do you need to tap into specific marketing skills or advice, such as how to improve your ads so they get return on investment?
  • Or do you want to be coached by someone experienced who helps you figure out how to unstick your marketing?
