For many organisations and people, claiming their Known Expert status is absolutely the right thing to do (if you haven’t already, check this article on the Known Expert Strategy).
Being Known as an Expert makes business sense; it allows people to ‘categorise’ you properly; it allows them to easily refer the ‘right’ kind of clients to you; it ensures you are ‘found’.
In short, we’d all much rather work with an expert on something than someone who does a pretty good job. So it’s a great strategy to be known as an Expert.
But even when intellectually we agree that establishing a Known Expert position is sensible and will lead to success, we often don’t claim it.
Why?
Because we don’t realise that what we do is actually pretty amazing.
When you’re busy getting on with running your business, doing your job and your organisation just does what it does, it can be hard to remember that other people or organisations don’t do it like that. That, to the right people, you are an expert.
It still amazes me that people think I explain marketing concepts in a way they can relate to and which helps them make a huge difference to how they do marketing. Why does it amaze me? Because it’s just what I do.
And that is probably the same for you.
You’re probably just getting on with it, doing what you do. And not realising how that is amazing. How the way you do it is different to the way other people do it. How you and your business has a wealth of experience and knowledge that equals expertise. How there are people out there who value that expertise and will pay for it.
So, if you’re sat there intellectually acknowledging that adopting a Known Expert Strategy for your business is the right thing to do but a part of you is hesitating, stop it. Start claiming your expertise status now and watch your business flourish.
Warm wishes,
Kara
